 | The Rhode Island Foundation was founded in 1916 and is one of the nation’s largest and oldest organizations serving a specific geographic region. In 2007, its assets exceeded $600 million, it accepted $35 million in charitable gifts, and it awarded $25.4 million in grants to more than 1,200 nonprofit organizations.
The Newport Showhouse Guild has worked with The Rhode Island Foundation to create The NSG Education Fund in Memory of Ellen S. Murphy to honor a woman who worked closely with the Guild for a number of years and who, in many ways, symbolized the energy and spirit that makes Newport County’s charitable sector work.
At her untimely death on January 30, 2008, Ellen was the Coordinator of the Newport County Fund of The Rhode Island Foundation. In this role, Ellen encouraged a wide range of non-profit groups with her enthusiasm and can-do attitude. In her memory, the Guild has created The NSG Education Fund in Memory of Ellen S. Murphy as a permanent endowment that will work in conjunction with the Newport County Fund to fund educational projects.
A portion of the proceeds from this year’s Showhouse will be used to create the fund. Individual contributions would also be welcome. For more information, contact Owen Heleen or Kimberly Butler at The Rhode Island Foundation.
